Home is a nomadic piece of theatre that, like a camper, arrives in any place, unpacks, tells a story, packs up again and leaves. Whether home is a mansion, a shack, or a tent, we all strive to protect the place of safety that we’ve created. Using their trademark blend of physicality, image, atmosphere, music and narrative, tangled feet explore where the edge of “home” is. It has an original score penned by Guy Connelly of Clock Opera.

What is Home?

From the directors, Nathan Curry and Kat Joyce

“Over the course of 2008 and 2009 tangled feet made HOME, a site-responsive piece of theatre that could happen in any location, inside or outside at any time of the day or night, for audiences of a few or for audiences of many. As a company we also went on an explorative journey to try to understand what the word ‘home’ means both to us as individuals but also to the wider world. The stories we found and made were collected together into the production. It has been an incredible journey that started with scratching an idea in a studio in Deptford to performing across the UK in summer 2009 to over 7,000 people.

HOME is a physical piece of performance, which lasts 45 minutes, that follows the interweaving stories of seven characters and their relationship with their home (represented by the reliable one man tent). The performance has happened in urban squares, shopping centres, nightclubs, fields, parks, festivals, theatres, tunnels and quaysides. The performance can also happen as a promenade with the audience walking or taking buses and boats, following the action and discovering secret parts of a city. Surrounding the performances was a scheme of working within communities and school residencies to creatively continue the discussion of what the word home means to us; these ideas then fed into the production.

We are very proud to be have made a piece of theatre that does not rely on a traditional theatre building, lights or mains power and which can turn up and meet any audience, anywhere. We look forward to continuing to perform HOME as part of the company’s repertoire in future years.”
